Do people not realize that the 's' on the end of Illinois is silent? Similar to the 's's in Des Moines? Is this just an eastern phenomenon, or just an Erie thing? What's the deal?!?!

So the weather forecast says it will be 60 today, with showers tonight turning into snow, then it's supposed to snow all day tomorrow with 1-3 inches of accumulation, but the high is supposed to be 40. Can anyone explain how this is possible? How will the ground be cold enough for 1-3 inches of snow to stick to it?
